Sikka, as the area where we now are is called, is known for its old church dating back to 1899, and its Ikat woven fabrics, which are enthusiastically sold by the local people. At Paga Beach we take a moment to relax and possibly have a swim. We then visit the traditional village of Jopu, before our arrival at tonight’s accommodation: the charming chalets of Kelimutu EcoLodge at the riverside of a mountain stream in the town of Moni.

Afteran early morning wake-up call we depart for the Kelimutu volcano. A short walk (30 minutes) will take us to the lookout point on the summit, where we wait for the sunrise. Keli Mutu means Mountain of the Spirits. This place is renowned for its famous 3 colour lakes: one turquoise, one brown and one black. Various degrees of dissolution of minerals give the volcanic lakes different colours. We enjoy a well-deserved breakfast upon our return to the hotel, then continue through beautiful landscape to the port town of Ende, where we have a look at the house where former president Soekarno was put under house arrest by the Dutch colonial powers. Along the way we stop at the green stone beach Pengga Jawa. Our final stop is the traditional village of Wogo. Accompanied by beautiful views of the Ebulobo volcano we continue to the mountain village of Bajawa. Day 07

Today we start our trekking to the remote village of Wae Rebo, situated on the mountain slope, just .. we begin our 3-hour trek up the slope of ‘Golo Ganggong’, along a narrow but well-trodden dirt trail. A few silver mountain springs provide refreshment along the way, and when turning our back to the mountain to take a rest, we witness the magnificent rugged countryside of this region. After arriving at Waerebo we have all the time we need to take pictures of the ancient dwellings with breathtaking mountain and valley scenery. We enjoy dinner in the company of our hosts, and sleep as guests of the village head in his ancient ‘rumah adat’.

Day 08

At dawn we enjoy an early rise; as the sun rises it spectacularly shines down on the mountaintop above and slowly reaches down to the village. We enjoy a hearty breakfast with locally brewn ginger coffee, and at 6.30am we continue our trekking with a 5 to 6-hour hike into the rainforest, over the mountaintop and down to the valley below.
As we cross the rainforest line, the vegetation becomes more exotic and the temperatures drop. We now enter the territory of the kopang and lawelyjang birds of paradise, whose singing echoes through the forest. After reaching the summit of Golo Ganggong, we encounter more and more species of gorgeous orchids. We now begin our descent to the Wailiwo river; the slopes here are steep and the road perilous, so we take our time to gently hike on down. In the coming hours we go from humid rainforest to dry savannah. We shake the ‘linta’ or local leeches off our body and enjoy the change in fauna and flora as we make our descent to the village of Nandong. From here it’s a short, 20-minute walk to the neighbouring Bearaja village. Here our new driver awaits us in his jeep. As we drive through the villages over rough country roads, we enjoy the welcome lunch box provided by our driver. A three-hour drive later we arrive at Labuanbajo. Tonight we stay at Golo Hilltop, a cozy little hotel nearby the Paradise bar, the place to be for sundowners at sunset.

Along the way we enjoy lunch with constantly changing views of emerald sea dotted with green islets. After sailing about one and a half hours we reach the ranger station at Loh Buaya. Our purpose here today is to see the Komodo Dragon. This largest living lizard on earth lives on the three islands of Rinca, Padar and Komodo, and in some parts of West Flores. Its length can go up to 3 meters, and it can weigh up to 90kg. Led by a local ranger we make a 2 hour soft trekking through forest and savanna. Komodo Dragons are often spotted on the way. From the highest point on this hike we witness a beautiful panorama of the surrounding island. Back on the boat we set sail for the rich waters near Pink Beach. Here we grab the snorkels and fins which are on board our boat and plunge in the sea to discover its amazing submarine life. After returning to the boat, we enjoy dinner and overnight on board.
