SUMBA SURF TRIP
A surf trip to Sumba is like going back in time, before Christianity or Islam or Buddhism, when humans worshipped Gods close to the earth with blood and stone. Four hundred kilometers east of Bali, and directly south of Komodo and Flores Islands, |

Sumba is an island on the cusp of Asia, Melanesia and Australia, and its culture and climate are effected by all three. CLICK HERE |

| SUMBA PASOLA WAR FESTIVAL |
| |
Pasola is the name of a war game tournament played by two groups of selected Sumbanese men. They riding their decorated selected horses fling wooden spears at each other. (The government allows the ritual game to take place, but the spears much the blunt). Pasola is a traditional ceremony of the Sumbanese held in the way of uniquely and sympathically traditional norms, every year in February and March and has become the focus of attention of the people since it is a part of the sacred homoge to the Marapu. |
| |
 |
| |
Pasola is, above all, the most exciting ritual of Sumba-where else in the world can you see colorful horsemen trying to kill each other? Where else in the world can you see the shedding of blood, the lost of and eye, and occasional death coloring the event and being the part of the game?.

sandalwood island of Indonesia |
| |
Sumba formerly known as the Sandalwood island of Indonesia, is also known for its race horses and ikat weaving beside the megalithic culture.
Sandalwood was the only known cure for many diseases until penicillin was invented. The Sumbanese traded with the Chinese until the 16th century, after which the Arabs became the most important trading partner until the early 20th century. The island is famous for its arts and handicrafts, particularly the textile "ikat" weaving. Sumba, however, is not for everyone. Neither the food nor accommodations are up to international standards. But if we are willing to make a little effort we can see an authentic, ancient culture with none of the layers of Hinduism or Islam mostly found elsewhere in the country.
|
 |
It is here where incredible rituals take place, the "pasola" where hundreds of horsemen fling spears at each other. The government allows the ritual to take place, but the spears must be blunt. Although some exist in East Sumba, it is in West Sumba that one can find a greater number of huge megalithic tombs and traditional thatched and peaked huts raise on stilts.

SUMBA IKAT WEAVING
Sumba Ikat textile represents the means by which the present generation passes on its messages to future generations. The pieces are deeply personal, follow distinct systematic form but show the individuality of the weaver and the village from which they are produced.
Locally they find their value in ritual exchange (for weddings and peace waging ceremonies) and as burial cloths. A high ranking individual can easily be wrapped in over 100 pieces of cloth as they enter the tomb.
