Surfing in Sumba is a journey off the beaten track, far away from Indonesia's classic surf destinations, offers a different experience of the surf-trip, something else than what you are usually used to encounter in this country.
The waves are powerful, it's often big and gnarly, and the spots are seldom close from shore. Surfing in Tarimbang is challenging, requires a real commitment, a good physical condition and being experienced in this kind of conditions, but it's worth the efforts because you will surf awesome waves far away from the crowds, on this island so culturally and geographically different than the other ones nearby.
Terimbang is a surf point on the island nothing much developed yet, each trip needs to be organized in advanced. We have a simple bungalows in the most of the surfing location and warm welcome from the local people.
The Waves : Suitable for beginners to advanced surfers. Winds for the lefts below are offshore in the morning, with SE tradewinds (Apr-Oct) blowing slightly crosshore in the middle of the day. An overview:
The Point - This left is the most consistent wave in the area and works on most tides. A long wally wave with an easy take-off and occasional faster section. Breaks into a deep-water sandbottom channel.
Five-O - Good and challenging lefthand barrel breaking along bend of reef into a channel. Needs a six-foot swell to start breaking and is surfed at higher or dead low tide.
Racetracks - Wedgy left that accelerates and builds in size down the line. Truly lives up to its name.
Beng-bengs - Fast left with hollow sections, can link up to ‘The Point’ at higher tides for a real long ride.
There’s also plenty of beachbreaks and a long right nearby that works with West or no wind (Nov-Mar).
TOUR ITINERARY
Day 01 : WAINGAPU - ARRIVAL
We will pick you up at your hotel in Bali, transfer to the airport of Bali to catch flight leave for Waingapu of East Sumba. Upon arrival in Waingapu our local respresentative will meet and greet you at the airport. The transfer to your hotel in Waingapu or direct to Terimbang (where the surfing spot). Simple meals provided.
Day 02 - 07 : TERIMBANG SURFING
All simple meals provided. all your day at your surfing activities. Accommodation at simple bungalows.
Day 08 : TERIMBANG - WAINGAPU - DENPASAR
Very early in the morning depart from Terimbang to Waingapu, direct transfer to the airport to catch your flight leaving for Bali. Upon arrival in Bali transfer to the original hotel.
Food: In Tarimbang-Sumba:
Local food.
