Sulawesi's most fascinating bird is the
Maleo, an endangered megapode, which we
have a chance of seeing. This unusual
bird buries its eggs in a community
mound. The heat generated by the
decaying vegetation in the mound
incubates the eggs. The Maleo works on
the mound daily to ensure the proper
temperature for the eggs. The chicks
emerge from the eggs, dig their way out
of the mound and are fully independent
and able to fly upon emerging.

Sulawesi island has a lot of dive spot
at the entire directions of the island
include Bunaken National Park, Banggai
and Togian archipelagoes, Selayar and
Taka Bonerate
|
The Bunaken National Marine Park was
formally established in 1991. It covers
a total surface area of about 890 square
kilometers, only three percent of which
are terrestrial, including the five
islands of Bunaken, Manado Tua,
Mantehage, Nain and Siladen as well as a
part of the North Sulawesi mainland. The
sea around the national park is
extremely deep and normally very clear.
Visibility can go up to 40 meters. Water
temperatures range from about 27 to 29
degrees Celsius.
No matter in what group of marine life
you are interested, you will be happy by
the number of species you find. The
National Marine Park offers some of the
highest levels of biodiversity
worldwide. As an example, seven out of
eight species of the giant clam occur in
Bunaken. Around 70 genera of corals
await you as well as an estimated 70
percent of all fish species known in the
western Indo Pacific.
Diving around Bunaken is mostly wall and
drift diving, but also offers several
beautiful coral slopes. A shipwreck from
WWII with good visibility and fish life
is also available.
