abbreviation of Cabo da Flores which was used by
Portuguese sailor in the 17th century to identify
the cape on the eastern end of the islands because
of its underwater gardens.
The
sea gardens extend a long most of the northern
coastline and offshore reefs and they are most
profuse near Maumere where a diving resort then it
lines down to the west at the seventeen islands of
Riung with its NATURE preservation. The tiny
islands row a long the northern sea of Flores
island. The nature beauties, mangroves forest,
bat, beautiful beach, tropical animals and the
colorful pre-historic dragon by local called MBOU
Riung or dragon.
At
the Seventeen Islands Nature preservation also
found some other species besides the MBOU RIUNG or
dragon such as hard and soft coral, red starfish
and colorful tropical fish, deer, bat, and many
more other eco system.
RIUNG --->> is a northern district from Ngada
Regency on the central part of Flores island -
East Nusa Tenggara. It drives about 2,5 hours
from Bajawa (capital city of Ngada) and has a good
access to every corner of the island. There are
three ways to get into Riung --- 1). from Maumere
- drive through the north lines, 2). from Ende
drive via Mbay & 3). from Bajawa.

The
trip will begin with a visit to the beautiful
Riung NATURE preservation then colored lakes
Kelimutu. Trip ends up at the ENDE airport of
Central Flores.
Mt.
Kelimutu, 1.690m fifty years ago, had three lakes,
one lake was blue green, one fiery green and one
red. Thirty years later, the colors had changed to
blue, red brown and cafe au lait. Now, Ata Bupu
(Lake) is a dramatic dark-brown. Ata Polo are dark
red-brown, and only Nuwa Muri remains aquamarine
or t.urquoise as it apparently always was.
No one
can explain the cause of such color changes except
to suppose that different minerals are dissolved
in the waters of each lake at Lake Kelimutu.
