Simple Story of Orang Utan and their Diary

Simple story of Orangutan named Rosmery and fam in their daily life at Tanjung Puting National Park

Rosmery's Adopted Babies

My first encounter with Rosmery was at the Tanjung Harapan Camp, known as the first rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutan. She was 12 years old, still young. No idea where she came from but usually most of the orangutan was from the palm oil plantation or ex logging area

She stayed with other orphaned orangutan, but most of them were still baby under 5 years old, everyday she is playing with them having banana and milk together during feeding time. Around 1 year she was always with the baby, may be that reason also make her decided to take one of them as adopted son, he was Tosido. She look after him just as her real baby until she is had moved to other camp Pondok Tanggui.

Few months after she moved, she had different personalized, no reason why??? maybe from new environment that she need to adjust or may be there is some think else. She look more aggressive, she likes to grab and bite to every peoples who try to close to her. In my self opinion, this is good start for her to be in the wild because when the peoples want to see her they will keep distance from her and never try to contact with her closely. Time goes by... Tosido grown up, he separate from his adopted mother quite often and finally one day we saw Rusmery sitting around camp ranger without her son. The ranger try to look for him and they found him on the top of the tree by himself, Rusmery did very good job to look after her adopted son.

Female Orangutan specially at Tanjung Putting National Park has first baby on the age between 12 to 15 years old. In the real wild population could be more than that age, Rusmery should be has her own baby on her age at that time. Remember Pondok tanggui is opened just few month after Tosido left her, so she did not quite well known about the forest surrounding or could be none of adult male stay around her rooming territory.

At the same time an other 2 orphan babies came in the camp Pondok Tanggui. Very tiny babies, could be around less then 2 years. Their mother been kill by the poacher and then they sell the baby. They got lucky (The babies) because they meet with someone who really want they live normal in the forest. Finally we can call them with Astra and the other one call Darmono. Few months they live together in special box design for them, hugging each other when stranger come close to them, playing toy together, when ever Darmono goes, Astra is always on the behind of him. They getting close and closer just alike brothers.

The present of that two babies give Rosmery attention. She is around the camp very often than before, she just have look at them from a distance when the ranger trained both of babies climb on the tree, and she come back to the forest for sleep after all babies back to their special box. It does not take long time to train them on the tree. They still tiny, but they learn fast, they capable to play around the tree which is the ranger still keep an eye to them.

We know Rosmery is always around their playing tree, she never go to the forest anymore after that babies come, her eye always pointed to one of them. When they are in the cage after full day playing Rosmery come and play with both of them from out side the cage.

The Ranger realized, Rosmery would like to take one of them as her adopted just alike Tosido But she can not ask to the ranger.. We think Rosmery give her attention to Astra, because he is the small one, then we give Astra to her. Seem she like Astra but her eye still on an other one in the cage, That is Darmono. Then we have an idea, as usually during morning after they having breakfast, they will play around the playing tree but this time none of ranger close to them.

As Our plan, Rosmery come by and spent few minutes with both of them and then she took Darmono up on her shoulder without sign any paper, Darmono is crying, Astra too, their hand strongly tide each other, Both realized that they will be separate, we can not help Astra. Rosmery take Darmono to the forest

Days after He loss his brother, Astra get sick, none of food come to his a little mouth, He is soo sad, and at the end Astra Dead.....
